Event Policies:

This course covers trapping safety, trapping equipment use, pelt handling, trapper responsibility, and ethical trapping practices. Upon completion of the course and scoring 80% or higher on the final exam, you will earn your Trapper Education Certificate. This certificate does not expire and is required to purchase a NYS Trapping license.  

Class length is approximately 8 hours with breaks. All students must bring the completed homework to this course. If homework is not completed, you will not be permitted to participate. You can download the manual and homework on this page. If you prefer to work from a hard copy of the manual, one can be mailed to you by emailing hunter@dec.ny.gov and include your name, mailing address, and type of in-person course. 

All class equipment will be provided for you. 

Students are encouraged to bring: 

  • Personal snacks and drinks.  
  • Appropriate clothing for the weather and outdoor conditions, including proper footwear.  
  • Pen/Pencil, sunscreen and bug spray (season dependent) 
Parents or guardians who wish to attend for observation should notify the instructor that you will be auditing the class.

About the Program

Overview:

Trapper Education is required for all new trappers before purchasing a NYS Trapping License. This course covers how to trap responsibly and selectively and how to handle pelts to produce marketable furs. 

NOTE: All courses require the completion of homework prior to attending. If you do not complete the homework, you cannot complete the course.
There is no minimum age to attend this course.
