Learn how to scout for deer. In this event you will walk local woods with an experienced Kinfolk mentor and learn to read the sign deer leave behind.
Good scouting is where every successful hunt starts. Before the season opens, we want to put you on the ground and teach you what to look for and how to turn that into a plan for opening day.
What We'll Cover:
- Various types of deer sign including tracks, trails, scat, rubs, and scrapes
- How to identify where deer are feeding
- Deer bedding
- Terrain features a deer hunter should be looking for
- How to choose a location to set up a stand or blind
- How to think about access to your stand or blind the day of the hunt
- How to use OnX in the field while scouting
- When you should scout
We'll also pull up OnX in the field and connect what you see on the map to what's under your boots.
Last year we created a presentation and recorded a session e-scouting this exact property with OnX. Watch it before you come and you'll get a lot more out of the day.

HFNY events allow you to see what the outdoor experience and wildlife conservation are all about.

HuntFishNY events are offered by NY DEC and a network of partners and instructors who conduct hands-on events, teaching the basics of hunting, fishing, trapping, outdoor safety, wildlife, and other outdoor skills.
DEC may facilitate registration and aid in advertising for HFNY events. If not a DEC hosted or co-hosted event, the logistics and implementation of the event are solely the responsibility of the host.
