Join Kinfolk Hunting for a mentored crossbow deer hunt on Shelter Island, timed to the peak of the white-tailed deer rut. The rut is one of the most active times to be in the woods, when deer are moving and visible.

Join Kinfolk Hunting for a mentored crossbow deer hunt on Shelter Island, timed to the peak of the white-tailed deer rut. The rut is one of the most active times to be in the woods, when deer are moving and visible.
Over three days, new hunters are paired one-on-one with an experienced Kinfolk mentor to learn the skills, hunt from tree stands, and bring a harvest from the woods to the table. Whether you have never picked up a crossbow or you are looking to build confidence in the field, this weekend is built for you to learn at your own pace.
What to Expect:

One-on-One Mentorship: Every mentee is paired with a seasoned Kinfolk hunter for the weekend. -
Crossbow & Hunting Skills: Crossbow safety and shooting, ethical hunting practices, reading deer sign, and understanding rut behavior. -
Tree Stand Hunting: Hands-on instruction in tree stand safety, setup, and shot placement from an elevated position. -
Processing & Butchering: Hands-on instruction in field dressing, processing, and butchering your harvest. -
Cooking Wild Game: Prepare and share a wild game meal together. -
Community & Kinship: Shared meals, shared lodging, and time around the table with your mentor and fellow hunters.

Zero Cost: This event is free for all participants. Room and board are provided. -
Loaner Gear Available: We will provide crossbows. We will also have loaner hunting gear for you to use.

Overview:
HFNY events allow you to see what the outdoor experience and wildlife conservation are all about.
Event topics can include target shooting, archery, fishing, field dressing, trapping, mentored hunts, seminars, social gatherings and more.

HuntFishNY events are offered by NY DEC and a network of partners and instructors who conduct hands-on events, teaching the basics of hunting, fishing, trapping, outdoor safety, wildlife, and other outdoor skills.
DEC may facilitate registration and aid in advertising for HFNY events. If not a DEC hosted or co-hosted event, the logistics and implementation of the event are solely the responsibility of the host.
