Event Policies:
This course covers firearms safety, hunter responsibility, and ethical hunting practices. Upon completion of the course and scoring 80% or higher on the final exam, you will earn your Hunter Education Certificate. This certificate does not expire and is required to purchase a first-time NYS hunting license.
Class length is approximately 7 hours with breaks. All students must bring the completed homework to this course. If homework is not completed, you will not be permitted to participate. You can download the manual and homework on this page. If you prefer to work from a hard copy of the manual, one can be mailed to you by emailing hunter@dec.ny.gov and include your name, mailing address, and type of in-person course.
Firearm handling and shooting of firearms will occur during this class. Please do not bring firearms or ammunition to the course. All class equipment and safety equipment will be provided for you.
Students are encouraged to bring:
- Personal snacks and drinks.
- Please dress appropriately for the weather and outdoor conditions, including proper footwear.
- Pen/Pencil, sunscreen and bug spray (season dependent)
Parents or guardians who wish to attend for observation must register as well. Please notify the instructor that you will be auditing the class.

Minimum Age Policies:
Student must be at least 11 years of age to attend the Hunter Education Course, unless he/she will, within the next year, hunt in a state that allows hunting under the age of 12 years. Check with the instructor as some restrictions will apply.

Overview:
Hunter Education is required before purchasing all hunting licenses, including bowhunting privileges.

NOTE: All courses require the completion of homework prior to attending. If you do not complete the homework, you cannot complete the course.
IMPORTANT: MINIMUM AGE FOR COURSE: 11 YEARS

Some students (those under the age of 12, those with civil or criminal firearms restrictions, or those barred from possessing a firearm) may not be allowed to handle and shoot live firearms during a hunter education course. If this includes you, please notify an instructor when you arrive for your course and accommodations will be made.
REQUIREMENT: ALL STUDENTS UNDER 16 YEARS OF AGE MUST bring a Permission Slip (PDF) signed by a parent or legal guardian.
