About this Event:

You must register for the class online at the NYS DEC website. Course manual can be picked up at Ephratah Rod & Gun Club Thurs/Fri/Sat 4pm-8pm (Call first 518-993-3061). Completed homework must be submitted at time of course (8am). OR Online work can be done through the DEC website (Homework and Study Materials) - choose the course that is FREE: Download Today's Bowhunter Manual; and complete the Bowhunter Education Homework Worksheet (link leaves DEC's website). (Cost: Free). (Bring your manual and homework with you to class). Age Policy: You must be 11 by Sept. 13, 2026. Minors (under 16) must have a signed permission slip. If you presently have a bow set specifically to you, you are allowed to bring it but cannot share. You can bring field arrows only, but not necessary. Call (Club) 518-993-3061 for more info. For Class: Dress for weather. Outdoor field work will be done. $5.00 lunch will be available for purchase. ***You may take the bow course without having a hunter training certificate; but you cannot get your bow license without the hunter training certificate.

Event Policies:

This course covers archery basics, crossbow safety, bowhunter responsibility, and ethical bowhunting practices. Upon completion of the course and scoring 80% or higher on the final exam, you will earn your Bowhunter Education Certificate. This certificate does not expire and is required to purchase a NYS Bowhunting Privilege. 

Class length is approximately 6 hours with breaks. All students must bring the completed homework to this course. If homework is not completed, you will not be permitted to participate. You can download the manual and homework on this page. If you prefer to work from a hard copy of the manual, one can be mailed to you by emailing hunter@dec.ny.gov and include your name, mailing address, and type of in-person course. 

All class equipment will be provided for you, unless course information states otherwise. 

Students are encouraged to bring: 

  • Personal snacks and drinks.  
  • Appropriate clothing for the weather and outdoor conditions, including proper footwear.  
  • Pen/Pencil, sunscreen and bug spray (season dependent) 
Parents or guardians who wish to attend for observation should notify the instructor that you will be auditing the class.      

Minimum Age Policies:

Student must be at least 11 years old to attend the course, unless they will, within the next year, hunt in a state that allows hunting under the age of 12.

About the Program

Overview:

Bowhunter Education is required to hunt ONLY deer and bear with a bow or crossbow. While not required, the course is recommended for anyone wishing to hunt any game with archery or crossbow. 

This course covers safety techniques and responsible, ethical hunting practices when pursuing game with a bow or crossbow.

NOTE : All courses require the completion of homework prior to attending. If you do not complete the homework, you cannot complete the course.
IMPORTANT: MINIMUM AGE FOR COURSE: 11 YEARS 
(Minimum age to purchase a license is 12 years)
