About this Event:

This class will be held at the Dansville Fish And Game Club, in the "Upper Clubhouse". Enter at Gibson Street and drive straight up the hill past the main lodge. Please assure that you map your route and allow adequate travel time. The class will begin promptly at 1:00 PM

Bring your favorite beverages and a light snack as there will not be time to leave the class for dinner. Please wear long pants and substantial shoes as we will be spending a significant portion of the class in hunting situations. Students may be exposed to Poison ivy, ticks and briars. Students may bring their own bows to the class and use them during range activities if they choose. We will have bows for student use if you do not bring one.

Event Policies:

This course covers archery basics, crossbow safety, bowhunter responsibility, and ethical bowhunting practices. Upon completion of the course and scoring 80% or higher on the final exam, you will earn your Bowhunter Education Certificate. This certificate does not expire and is required to purchase a NYS Bowhunting Privilege. 

Class length is approximately 6 hours with breaks. All students must bring the completed homework to this course. If homework is not completed, you will not be permitted to participate. You can download the manual and homework on this page. If you prefer to work from a hard copy of the manual, one can be mailed to you by emailing hunter@dec.ny.gov and include your name, mailing address, and type of in-person course. 

All class equipment will be provided for you, unless course information states otherwise. 

Students are encouraged to bring: 

  • Personal snacks and drinks.  
  • Appropriate clothing for the weather and outdoor conditions, including proper footwear.  
  • Pen/Pencil, sunscreen and bug spray (season dependent) 
Parents or guardians who wish to attend for observation should notify the instructor that you will be auditing the class.      

Minimum Age Policies:

Student must be at least 11 years old to attend the course, unless they will, within the next year, hunt in a state that allows hunting under the age of 12.

About the Program

Overview:

Bowhunter Education is required to hunt ONLY deer and bear with a bow or crossbow. While not required, the course is recommended for anyone wishing to hunt any game with archery or crossbow. 

This course covers safety techniques and responsible, ethical hunting practices when pursuing game with a bow or crossbow.

NOTE : All courses require the completion of homework prior to attending. If you do not complete the homework, you cannot complete the course.
IMPORTANT: MINIMUM AGE FOR COURSE: 11 YEARS 
(Minimum age to purchase a license is 12 years)
