Manual and worksheets can be picked up at the following locations: A) Buffalo NYSDEC Headquarters 270 Michigan Ave. Buffalo, NY 14203 716-851-7000 (Hours 8:30am to 4:30pm M-F) B) NYSDEC Region 9 Office 182 East Union St. Suite 3 Allegheny, NY 14706 716-372-0645 C) Town of Wheatfield Town Clerk's Office or Wheatfield Community Center (During office operating hours only) D) Contact Master Instructor Eric Minton if necessary. (isfump@verizon.net or 716-694-9414) 3) Take and complete the online bowhunter education course. Available at Bowhunter-ed.com (link leaves DEC's website) There is a fee for this on-line course. Once completed you must print out the completion voucher. Bring that voucher to the certification course as proof of completion. This voucher will be accepted as your Homework Assignment ONLY. You must attend all classroom sessions, participate in all exercises, successfully pass the test, and fulfill all certification requirements.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THIS COURSE: 1) Must be at least 11 years old on date of first class. 2) Food and non-alcoholic beverages are allowed in the facility. 3) Parents, guardians, and guests are welcomed to accompany students. 4) Day two (Tuesday) will be our scheduled Field Day Exercises. All students are required to actively participate in each exercise. Students must dress appropriately for these outdoor activities. 5) All students must shoot at least 3 arrows with the bows supplied by the NYSDEC. This "Live Fire" shooting exercise concentrates on safety and proper shooting mechanics with little emphasis on accuracy. You may bring your own bow, but it is not recommended. NO BROADHEADS will be allowed in the classroom or on Wheatfield property. 6) If you have special needs or any concerns, please let me know. 7) If you cannot attend this course, you must cancel your registration. Event Policies:
This course covers archery basics, crossbow safety, bowhunter responsibility, and ethical bowhunting practices. Upon completion of the course and scoring 80% or higher on the final exam, you will earn your Bowhunter Education Certificate. This certificate does not expire and is required to purchase a NYS Bowhunting Privilege.
Class length is approximately 6 hours with breaks. All students must bring the completed homework to this course. If homework is not completed, you will not be permitted to participate. You can download the manual and homework on this page. If you prefer to work from a hard copy of the manual, one can be mailed to you by emailing hunter@dec.ny.gov and include your name, mailing address, and type of in-person course.
All class equipment will be provided for you, unless course information states otherwise.
Students are encouraged to bring:
- Personal snacks and drinks.
- Please dress appropriately for the weather and outdoor conditions, including proper footwear.
- Pen/Pencil, sunscreen and bug spray (season dependent)
Parents or guardians who wish to attend for observation must register as well. Please notify the instructor that you will be auditing the class.
Minimum Age Policies:
Student must be at least 11 years old to attend the course, unless they will, within the next year, hunt in a state that allows hunting under the age of 12.

Overview:
Bowhunter Education is required to hunt ONLY deer and bear with a bow or crossbow. While not required, the course is recommended for anyone wishing to hunt any game with archery or crossbow.
This course covers safety techniques and responsible, ethical hunting practices when pursuing game with a bow or crossbow.
