Homework is required: you can download the manual and homework (see below), or pick up a paper copy of the manual and homework (the 4-page pull out in the middle of the manual) from the following locations:

    •          HQ at 6274E. Avon-Lima Rd, Avon (24/7 via yellow bins outside the front door) 

    •         Bath sub-office: 7291 Coon Rd, Bath (8:30-4:30 M-F) 

    •        Iroquois Field office/NWR, 1101 Casey Rd, Basom, www.fws.gov/refuge/Iroquois) 



  • Montezuma Audubon Center; 2295 State Route 89, Savannah (10 AM – 4 PM Tues-Sat.) (http://ny.audubon.org/montezuma) 

  • the Town Of Concord Town Hall located in Springville.

 
 We will be taking a half hour lunch break. Lunch will be available to purchase for a nominal fee or you can choose to bring your own lunch. Several fast food places are also available in the Springville area should you choose that route.
 
 
IF THE CLASS IS FILLED: 
 
-          Walk-ins are welcome, with completed homework, to fill seats IF a registered student fails to show without notice; be prepared to be turned away if there is no open seat. 
-          Keep checking this event in case someone does cancels; anyone can register for that seat on a first come, first serve basis.

Cancellation Policies:

If you can no longer attend this class, please cancel your registration as soon as possible.

Event Policies:

This course covers archery basics, crossbow safety, bowhunter responsibility, and ethical bowhunting practices. Upon completion of the course and scoring 80% or higher on the final exam, you will earn your Bowhunter Education Certificate. This certificate does not expire and is required to purchase a NYS Bowhunting Privilege. 

Class length is approximately 6 hours with breaks. All students must bring the completed homework to this course. If homework is not completed, you will not be permitted to participate. You can download the manual and homework on this page. If you prefer to work from a hard copy of the manual, one can be mailed to you by emailing hunter@dec.ny.gov and include your name, mailing address, and type of in-person course. 

All class equipment will be provided for you, unless course information states otherwise. 

Students are encouraged to bring: 

  • Personal snacks and drinks.  
  • Please dress appropriately for the weather and outdoor conditions, including proper footwear.  
  • Pen/Pencil, sunscreen and bug spray (season dependent) 
Parents or guardians who wish to attend for observation must register as well.  Please notify the instructor that you will be auditing the class.   

Minimum Age Policies:

Student must be at least 11 years old to attend the course, unless they will, within the next year, hunt in a state that allows hunting under the age of 12.

About the Program

Overview:

Bowhunter Education is required to hunt ONLY deer and bear with a bow or crossbow. While not required, the course is recommended for anyone wishing to hunt any game with archery or crossbow. 

This course covers safety techniques and responsible, ethical hunting practices when pursuing game with a bow or crossbow.

NOTE : All courses require the completion of homework prior to attending. If you do not complete the homework, you cannot complete the course.
IMPORTANT: MINIMUM AGE FOR COURSE: 11 YEARS 
(Minimum age to purchase a license is 12 years)
